I ordered twenty bare boards from JLCPCB on the seventh of July. They landed a week later, about three weeks earlier than I had planned for.
The first bare one is what got me. I made that. This was my first time ever ordering a real PCB, so getting the badge from my screen to a factory was its own small adventure. Exporting the Gerber files, the manufacturing files a board house actually needs, was the fiddliest part of the whole thing. A working breadboard is a promise, not a product. To actually get a badge, I needed to turn that circuit into a PCB, and that meant laying out a board in KiCad.

I built the 555 flasher circuit on a breadboard, and getting there took a bit more work than I expected. I had to knock the rust off the 555&amp;rsquo;s pinout, and I was working off someone else&amp;rsquo;s schematic. One night at Bit Haven, one of the founders mentioned wanting a custom badge for the space. They weren&amp;rsquo;t sure exactly what they wanted, but I let them know I had a degree in Electronics Engineering and could probably make one. That conversation kicked off my journey toward building the badge.
For anyone who hasn&amp;rsquo;t been to one, a hackerspace is a community workshop where people share tools, benches, and knowledge to build things such as electronics, software, hardware, cybersecurity, whatever you&amp;rsquo;re into.</description></item></channel></rss>
